Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, and musicians from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago joined Disney students and students from five Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for a culminating performance and celebration marking the end of the second year of a music education partnership between the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the five schools involved in the program—Agassiz, Clinton, Disney, Edwards and Swift Elementary Schools.

The CPS students showcase work—music, visual art and spoken word—that they have created in response to an arts curriculum focused on the theme of courage, inspired by the literary figure of Don Quixote and connected to contemporary issues in students’ lives. The work by the students was created in collaboration with their teachers, CSO teaching artists and Fellows from the Civic Orchestra. In addition to performances of new student compositions, the event includes a performance of an excerpt from Richard Strauss’ “Don Quixote” by Fellows from the Civic Orchestra as well as remarks and participation by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, September 14, as part of Back to School Week, the White House will host a summit on Computer Science for All. The event will mark progress on expanding computer science (CS) education since the President’s call to action in his State of the Union eight months ago, and celebrate new commitments in support of the effort.

At this event, some of our own CS leaders from CPS (Brenda Wilkerson and Alan Mather from the Office of College and Career Success, and Brad Fisher from Disney Magnet) will be sharing their vision for what districts across the nation need to implement CS4All.
